When the Coronavirus shut us down, clubs and festivals ceased, and everyone was essentially forced inside with no definitive end in sight, DJ Times wondered: How is our tribe coping? How are DJs getting by? So, we sent out our “Coronavirus Questionnaire” to DJ/producers from all musical genres to find out.

For the short-term (hopefully), DJ Times will be presenting the questionnaire responses from talented music-makers from all over the world. Here’s another installment from Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano!

Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, SONO Music, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

What’s it like where you are? Probably like most countries which have been hit by the Coronavirus, it’s strange. Nobody could have expected this and these are uncertain times for everyone. Very eerie. Our priority is taking care of our families. We stick to what our government asks us to do and stay at home.

Have you lost income-producing work? Again, this goes for everyone. A lot of shows have been cancelled and we were looking forward to each and every one of them. Gutted, but looking at the state of the world, it’s nothing compared to what’s happening around us.

Are you doing anything now that can or will produce music-related income? Certainly. Luckily, we were already in the process of exploring new revenue streams these past months. So we’re somewhat prepared for the new situation, but still… it's a challenge. We will announce more on this soon!

What are you doing now that’s ultimately constructive to your music life/career? Like we said, for the last few months, we were reflecting the business side of our careers and were already developing concepts and ideas to expand our brand in the future. This situation gives us the opportunity to work more closely with our team and speed up that process. We are completely new to this, but it’s all very exciting! Coming weeks will see us explore a lot of new business territories. We’ll promise this all will make more sense in a month or so.

What’s the most surprising thing you’ve realized during this period of social distancing? To see how many people unite and become helpful in these desperate times. There are so many amazing initiatives popping up on to help people, which is truly heart-warming. Love rules people!

Have you considered doing anything online? Have you seen any DJ video streams that impressed you? We actually teased our livestream recently and it’s coming up soon. Keep an eye on our socials to find out when! It will be challenging, though, as we can't team up behind the decks. So we are now figuring out and practicing how we can still do those sets together. To answer your other question: We have been eyeing a few of our colleagues on several streams. Loving it. Especially the vibe of those people watching. Everyone is really up for it. So cool!

Any theme tunes recommended for the moment? You know, we are positive guys. We are always in an uplifting spirit, especially in these difficult times. So ours would be “Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley.

Any advice on staying sane & relatively positive through this situation? Use these crazy times to reflect and try to stay true to yourself… reignite the flames of some old passion and dig up that hobby that you haven’t had time for lately. Remember, we’re all in this together. Empower and embrace each other to get through this. Keep safe, everyone!
