The 33rd edition of the Scandalo social soireé descends on Brooklyn hotspot Black Flamingo on Friday, January 25 from 10 PM – 4 AM. Resident DJ fernanDITO and special guest ALONE will be alternating at the downstairs DJ booth once per hour, while local New York City DJ Toby will be covering the upstairs bar all night.
We caught up with fernanDITO and ALONE after a few vegan tacos courtesy of the club — did we mention that it’s a vegan restaurant during the day? Learn more about Black Flamingo by reading ClubWorld’s in-depth coverage, and read on about the upcoming Scandalo event. We’ve been promised a menu of Italo Disco, Europop, Classic House, and Funky Beats.
Interview with fernanDITO
DJ Times:
What is Scandalo all about?
fernanDITO:
Scandalo (Italian for Scandal) has a few meanings. One of them is “great noise and rampage caused by something or someone”. We want to throw parties that are loud and fun, concentrating on music that is exciting but not necessarily new. Scandalo brings a carefree space to party where old hits mix with new ones and the party is a enjoyable sequence of “feel-good” tunes to dance to and enjoy. No attitude, no stress, no seriousness.
DJ Times:
How long has the party been running?
fernanDITO:
We’ve been doing it for 4.5 years. This is the 33rd event.
DJ Times:
Has Scandalo changed very much over the years?
fernanDITO:
We’ve been lucky to feature a host of international talent over the years, which makes us very happy.
DJ Times:
Who are a few of your favorite performers from past Scandalo events?
fernanDITO:
Florence D’Lee, Martin Blix from Italove, and Gieza Poke. They’re amazing.
DJ Times:
What brought you to Black Flamingo?
fernanDITO:
After a few guest appearances DJ there, the management at Black Flamingo and our team agreed that it would be the perfect space for Scandalo.
DJ Times:
Your residency has been at Trophy Bar in Brooklyn for quite some time now. Should party-goers expect Scandalo to return to Trophy Bar after the event at Black Flamingo?
fernanDITO:
We still love Trophy Bar. We might do another event there in the future, but nothing is planned as of right now.
DJ Times:
Will there be any live performers like we’ve seen at past Scandalo events?
fernanDITO:
We hope to have live musicians, but Black Flamingo’s basement can get really packed, so we’re still working through that. Unfortunately, we won’t have any drag performances this time, but possibly at the next Black Flamingo event.
DJ Times:
Do you have any DJ sets online for fans to check out?
fernanDITO:
Check out fernanDITO.com and SoundCloud.
DJ Times:
What else is on the horizon for fernanDITO and Scandalo?
fernanDITO:
Scandalo will soon become a bi-monthly party in New York City. We love our residency in Brooklyn and are looking at bringing Scandalo to other cities around the world in the off-month when we don’t have the party in Brooklyn. To kick things off, Scandalo will be landing in South Florida, USA at the end of February, 2019.
Interview with ALONE
DJ Times:
What do our readers need to know about ALONE?
ALONE:
Being ALONE is about daring to follow your own path and your own vision, even if no one else gets it. Be your unique, original, authentic self and let your light brighten up the world. We are all alone and that’s what brings us togetha. I play music from different genres and decades that all share a universal, primal, and emotional groove.
DJ Times:
You recently conducted and performed with a 12-piece band at Mercury Lounge in Manhattan. Will you approach your Scandalo DJ set differently?
ALONE:
My upcoming set at Scandalo will be the first time I incorporate live elements into my set. Some of my band members will come through to play their instruments live over original beats that I will mix. Beyond that, expect the usual groovy, funky, and sexy beats that make up the signature ALONE sound.
DJ Times:
How did you link up with Fernandito and the Scandalo crew?
ALONE:
Fernandito and I have known each other for years, through mutual friends and dancing on the same dancefloors. We have always wanted to DJ togetha, and we both played a friend’s birthday party this past summer. It really flowed well and that sealed the deal for this upcoming party.
DJ Times:
We’ve been told looks will be served. Can you share some tips for fans looking to dress to impress?
ALONE:
Serve the look you wish to see in the world! Remember: Opulence is a state of mind.
DJ Times:
Do you have any new music fans should check out?
ALONE:
I recently recorded some original music, and we used completely live instrumentation. The first song from that is called “Everything” — it will make you feel so good! Listen to it here.
DJ Times:
What about your DJ sets?
ALONE:
For those who wanna get in the mood before the party, check out my 3 hour live set titled “Pelvic Groove”.
Scandalo 33 will be free before midnight, so don’t forget to RSVP on Eventbrite, hit “Going” on Facebook, then add the event to your Resident Advisor calendar, for good measure.
