Wolfgang Gartner Speaks
Wolfgang Gartner didn’t win a Grammy for his remix of Andy Caldwell’s “Funk Nasty”, but just the fact that he was nominated was enough for EDM fans. We recently spoke to Wolfgang Gartner….
How has DJing changed for you compared to when you first started 15 years ago? Actually, it’s pretty similar except now I use two CD players and a mixer. I’m usually using the CDJ-1000s and the DJM-800 mixer. I go crazy on that mixer, and I abuse the effects pretty drastically. The thing that’s really changed for me is the programming. I do a lot of preparation and editing for my sets. I’m very organized and my sets are just non-stop. There is absolutely no downtime. There isn’t even enough time for me to sit and have a drink or even go to the bathroom sometimes.
What kind of editing? Ninety-nine-percent of what I play at my shows is re-edits that I’ve done personally. When you come to one of my gigs, you will hear all-exclusive material or my own productions. Most of the tracks that I find aren’t as effective as they could be, so I usually spend two to five hours in the studio working on each track, just pimping it out. I add build-ups, extend parts, insert drums, and often mix something in that people are very familiar with, such as a vocal and a cappella. I completely re-make the track.
Aren’t there some tunes that you don’t need to touch? There are occasional gems that don’t need any work, but they’re usually being played by other DJs, and I don’t want to play things that other DJs are playing. I need to bring something fresh to the table. My CD book is so diversified and I play so many different styles of music during one night. Basically, I do the same thing that I tried to do in my first gig, but now I execute it very well. That’s because I’ve been doing it for 15 years.
