New York – An old-fashioned DJ battle is, at its core, not too different from a rumble between two gangs. The W Gangs of New York music series takes that idea and runs with it, pitting artists against each other in a weekly musical showdown. These sound clashes celebrate Black Apple’s release of jackets based on the gangs of the film The Warriors. We trekked out to the hotel on a rainy Manhattan Sunday to check out the 4th night of the series, featuring a set from none other than New York house legend Todd Terry, as well as a live performance from rising rapper Le1f.

Held in The Living Room Bar of the Times Square W Hotel, the night was provided with lavish decorations by the lounge’s vast array of columns, hanging art, and angular geometry. The night began with an opening set from Aharaw, who played a mix of today’s rap hits and the latest in underground hip hop, from “I Need a Hitta” by Katie Got Bandz to Iggy Azalea’s “Work.” The set, mostly focused on track selection and impact, warmed the well-dressed crowd up before Todd Terry took to the decks.

Simply put: Todd Terry tore up The W Hotel on Sunday. Transitioning from the hip hop preceding his set by flying straight into the house sound that made him famous, the New York native delved through a series of high-octane floor fillers and classics. From explorations of his own material, including “Can You Party” and Tee’s Unreleased mix of “Jumpin’,” to old-school dance hits, like Inner City’s “Good Life,” Terry took the initially-reserved lounge crowd onto its feet and back to the early raves of the 90s. Terry even fused the old with the new with a unique pairing of a vocal sample from Justice & Simian “We Are Your Friends” with a traditional house track.

The W Hotel’s Gangs of New York event series continues each Sunday through August 25th. For more information on the W Hotel’s Gangs of New York, including future artist announcements, go here.
