Singing the Holiday-Booking Blues? Sing No More...

We know, we know. We hear DJs of all stripes singing the Holiday Blues…holiday bookings are as active as a tanning salon in the Kalahari Desert, because corporate budgets remain Lohan-thin, and it doesn’t seem like it’s getting any better any time soon. But there are some things that DJs are doing to keep the coffers flowing.

“We focus on quality over quantity, and aim our sites on the higher-end clients and venues plus lots of referral networking,” says DJ Brian Howe.

“But this past year we aligned ourselves with several high-end venues and event companies that normally book bands for their holiday parties. Because of the recession, many of the higher-end corporations are no longer booking bands, which can cost upwards of $10,000 to $14,000 (not including sound production, lighting, techs, etc.). Instead, they began looking at higher-end DJs, based on the recommendations of their venues or event agencies.”

In the end, Brian says booking a corporate event at between $1,000 and $1,500 is pretty easy as long as you make the right connections.

“You don’t even have to bring equipment (aside from your DJ head unit), and in fact if you own a fair amount of high-end lighting, sound and video gear—uplighting, intelligent lighting and trussing, for example—you can easily fetch between $3,000 and $5,000, as these event companies and venues often outsource their production to A/V companies.

“Being able to offer both the service (DJ) and production (sound, lighting and video) means less work for the venues and event companies, plus more profit for the DJ and often repeat business. But you had better deliver, because these high-end companies are working with very large corporations who expect (and in fact demand) nothing but the best and won’t be impressed with a standard DJ set up with powered speakers.”
