Novation Announces Launch Control XL

By  |

Novation has announced the Launch Control XL, a mixer designed to help Ableton users focus more on their music and less on their laptop.

The Launch Control XL is built with 24 knobs arranged in rows of eight, mirroring Ableton’s mixer interface. The controller is also equipped with 16 multicolored buttons and eight rugged faders, all of which are integrated with Ableton Live from the moment they’re plugged in. Additionally, all controls are entirely reassignable to any other parameter. The Launch Control XL is also built sturdy and fully USB bus-powered, making it ultraportable and gig-ready.

The Launch Control XL is packaged with Ableton Live Lite and 1 GB of Loopmasters sample content, and the unit is plug-and-play compatible with Mac, PC, and iPad (via a Camera Connection adapter). The Launch Control XL can also combine with a Launchpad S for enhanced performance.

I suppose this is a good idea for Novation (as they are mainly the Controller arm of FocusRite), but they already make the Remote Zero SL Mk2 (which is due for an update), is the Launch Control XL the replacement for it (please say this is just a lower-tier device)?

Novation makes good, quality gear (I have a few units that are still going strong despite many years of use), and Automap is amazingly useful and easy, but it seems their LEDs are a little dated, and somewhat behind the industry. My expectations are lowered every time I see a new Novation release with “bi-color LEDs.”

For the love of everything good in this world Novation, PLEASE (with whipcream and a cherry on top) move past these bi-color LEDs. The rest of the industry has, and it’s time for Novation to as well.
