Mountain Oasis: Electronic Music in the Carolina Pines
Asheville, N.C. – Between 2010 and 2012, Moogfest was a communion between legendary synth manufacturer Moog Music and promoter AC Entertainment that saw thousands of costumed fans fill the venues of downtown Asheville on or near Halloween weekend.
The program was a heady mix of art, technology and music that featured the luminaries of electronic music—past and present. Speakers and performers included old-schoolers like Brian Eno and Tangerine Dream, while relative new-schoolers included DJs like Carl Craig and James Murphy.
However, after the 2012 event, a divorce (of sorts) between the two entities was announced. Moog Music would present the next Moogfest in April 2014, while AC Entertainment re-branded the October ’13 show—now calling it Mountain Oasis Electronic Music Summit. As we did with Moogfest, DJ Times will serve as a media sponsor for the 2013 Mountain Oasis event, which runs this weekend, Oct. 25-27.
Again set in the beautiful college town nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Summit will present a variety of sessions, including a Saturday keynote from electronic hitmaker Gary Numan. But mostly fans will be coming out for the musical lineup and, like previous Moogfests, this one offers an intoxicating mixture of electronic-dabbling bands, pure electronic musicians and dancefloor-friendly DJs. And again, this year’s list is impressive as it includes legendary bands like Nine Inch Nails and Neutral Milk Hotel, electronic acts like Animal Collective and Disclosure, and DJs like Bassnectar and Claude VonStroke.
DJ Times will co-sponsor the Sunday night event at the Orange Peel nightclub, featuring electronic-music legends The Orb. Here’s to an evening that features “Little Fluffy Clouds.” See you there!
