#FreePlayFriday – 11/8/13

The weekend has arrived, and with it comes a new pack of free downloads for #FreePlayFriday. This week, grab five tracks ranging from funky nu-disco to raging electro house.

Zimmer’s “Galapagos” kicks off this week’s set of picks. The track is moody, midtempo piece accented with twinkling synths that give it the tropical flair alluded to in its title. The Knocks’ remix of “Girls” by indie-rockers The 1975 contains similar sparkling synths wrapped into an nu-disco house package. The prominent piano making up the backbone of the track is particularly memorable.

Thibault turns it up to 11 on “Outlaw.” Opening with loud piano crashes that turn into a melodic lead, the track’s buzzy bass drop makes for an electro house stormer fitted with harmonic moments. Beni Haze’s “Distance” similarly mashes up seemingly opposing sounds with its ambient approach to trap. Featuring verses from both Juicy J and Kyle, the track’s spacey production makes everything fit together snugly.

Sharam Jey and Jon Sine round out this week’s picks with their edit of Nina Simone’s “Sinnerman.” While the thought of editing Simone’s vocals seems almost criminal, the pair’s filtering gives this deep house cut a haunting, detached quality.
