Pad out your decks for the weekend on this #FreePlayFriday with our picks of the best free tracks. This week’s picks range from jumpy Melbourne Bounce to summery nu-disco, so you can grab any and everything in between!
First up is the dub of Taco Cat’s remix of Static Revenger’s “Back Off, Bitch!,” which distorts Kay’s vocals and ups the house factor with its Melbourne Bounce sound. The pitch-shifting synths present throughout the drop really give the track infectious quality. This joyous sound is also present in Viceroy’s shimmering nu-disco take on Passion Pit’s “Carried Away” and shows that even though summer isn’t just a season; it’s a state of mind.
Los Angeles rock sister trio HAIM topped the UK album charts last week with the band’s debut album Days Are Gone, which makes now the perfect time to highlight The Knocks’ remix of the track “Forever.” The retooling adds an uplifting synth line that skitters and jitters over light piano and the nostalgic vocals. Brillz dropped a trapped-out remix of Katy Perry’s “Roar.” The center “Roar-oar-oar” hook is utilized throughout as high hats and handclaps dominate the uncharacteristically-sunny laser synths.
“Venus,” Paul Oakenfold’s collaboration with rapper Azealia Banks, rounds out this week’s picks. The progressive house-rap fusion was first premiered this summer, but is now available for free on Oakenfold’s Facebook. The soaring synths complement Banks’ vocal to create a track that is heavy on the drama and anthemic qualities.
