It’s been nearly 2 years since Azealia Banks first dropped “212,” a reworking of “Float Your Boat” by Lazy Jay. While the track went on to become a club staple, the New York-grown rapper has yet to release her debut album, Broke With Expensive Taste. Finally, after months of teasing her collaborations with trance powerhouse Paul Oakenfold, she has unexpectedly released “Venus (Ibiza Edition)” onto her Soundcloud.
While Banks has flirted with dance styles like moombahton, trap, and 90s house revival in the past, “Venus” is an unabashed explosion into big room EDM sounds. Subtlety goes out the window once Oakenfold’s massive, bombastic synths kick in during the drop as Banks channels early 90s dance divas as she sings, recalling the vocals of CeCe Peniston and C+C Music Factory. Two particular highlights worth mentioning are the stop-gap before the first drop and Banks’ sultry French monologue over a stripped beat during a bridge. The track is labeled as the “Ibiza Edition” and there seem to be parts of the vocals missing, so we’re presuming this version is a dub edit of some sort, with the main mix to come at a later date.
No official word yet on if this will be on Oakenfold or Banks’ upcoming albums, or when the original mix is slated to be released. For now, listen to the track above.
