New York City—It was big news that three Swedish DJs could sell out Manhattan’s famed Madison Square Garden, and do so online in a matter of minutes.. But, soon after, the question became, “OK, but can they deliver?”
Answer: Oh, yeah.
The triple threat of Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell and Steve Angello rocked the joint like it’s never been rocked, turning “The World’s Most Famous Arena” into a full-on club zone. Here’s how it went from my view in Section 108:
In signature SHM style, the giant curtain played a short video clip, flashed the trio’s three-dot logo, and descended to reveal our reigning heroes. They started off strong, playing the typical non-vocal crowd faves. Hitting some of their solo work, we heard Axwell’s “Watch the Sunrise” and later an encore of “I Found You.”
The boys rocked through standard set nuggets such as Nadia Ali’s “Pressure” (Alesso Remix) and Avicii’s “Levels,” plus an ear-tickling mash-up of Nero’s “Promises” with Pendulum’s “The Island.” Also, Tinie Tempah (“Miami 2 Ibiza”) and John Martin (“Save the World”) both raised the roof with their live vocal appearances.
As seems to be Garden tradition, they shut off the booze faucets relatively early, but that didn’t seem to matter to the neon-clad crazies. No, this audience of raving stadium sardines somehow managed to get its collective groove on—but it wasn’t easy. Surely, a few dancers went home with some bruises on their shins—the price of a good party.
Alas, the festivities concluded around 1 a.m., and as the official last woman standing, I departed, while overhearing this quote from stadium staff: “Yo! I never seen the Garden this smashed. I’ll say, the garden just got smashed!”
