Las Vegas—For the past couple years, we’ve been hearing this mantra from Out West: “Las Vegas is becoming America’s Ibiza.”
Having soaked in the deep EDM culture of the legendary Spanish party island—the place where every major global DJ enjoys either a residency or a series of high-profile guest spots—that notion always seemed to strike us as well-intentioned PR fluff, if not full-on wishcasting. As we know, just because you say it doesn’t make it so.
But come Spring 2011, honesty compels us to report—it looks like that statement’s finally become a reality. Our recent weekend in Vegas certainly opened our eyes.
Why? By now, most major Vegas properties have fully embraced electronic dance music and its top talent. Longtime global stars (like Oakenfold and Tiësto) and larger-than-life brands (F*** Me I’m Famous) have flocked to the desert playground to fill up the ever-expanding nightlife opportunities. From our experience, we saw that the evening venues were filled with crazy party people and the daytime pool events continued to kick out the club jams. This isn’t PR fluff—this is happening.
Case in Point: The Tao Group’s growing empire. Not only is the outfit drawing major DJ talent like Eric Morillo, Kaskade and Markus Schulz to venues like Tao Nightclub and Tao Beach at The Venetian and Lavo at the nearby Palazzo, the Tao Group recently opened the spectacular Marquee Nightclub at The Cosmopolitan and it expects to soon open the Marquee Day Club (April 9, with Roger Sanchez).
After a memorable evening at Marquee Nightclub with ATB on the decks and a fun-in-the-sun afternoon at Tao Beach with ATB and Robbie Rivera dropping the beats, we were certainly bowled over.
In fact, now it can be revealed that DJ Times has entered into a partnership with Tao Group for the upcoming America’s Best DJ promotion and its supporting Summer Tour. Presented by DJ Times and Pioneer DJ, the America’s Best DJ Summer Tour will include a Vegas stop July 4th weekend. Most importantly, America’s Best DJ will hold its Closing Party/Award Ceremony at Marquee Nightclub on October 1st.
It should also be noted that we’ll kick off the ABDJ tour and go live with our new ABDJ website on May 28 from Detroit’s Movement festival . Stay tuned for more details.
But in the meantime—Viva Las Vegas!
