After making headlines last week for leaving Twitter, deadmau5 surprised club-goers at Las Vegas’ XS with an impromptu, unannounced set on Friday night. The Mau5 took the stage at 11:30 that night, coming on before headliner Wolfgang Gartner’s scheduled set at 1 AM. Despite lacking his famous headpiece, deadmau5’s set was full of his signature style, complete with opening track “Strobe,” a flashing LED wall, and explosions of confetti.

This off-the-cuff decision stemmed from a dinner meeting with XS Managing Partner Jesse Waits following a private event deadmau5 played earlier in day. The pair reminisced on the artist’s past performances on the club, which lead to his suggestion that he be booked to play that night. After Waits informed him he could not pay, deadmau5 offered to do it for free. The resulting set was a surprise to everyone, even Wolfgang Gartner when he walked later in the night.
