Chauvet’s NEXUS Delivers Last Minute SXSW Lighting for Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga’s vomit-filled performance at Austin, TX’s South By Southwest festival on March 13 generated a cavalcade of headlines, but behind-the-scenes, an eleventh-hour venue switch left stage production scrambling until the decision to use Chauvet Professional’s NEXUS saved the day. The singer was slated to perform at Doritos’ large vending machine stage, but a last-minute permit denial forced the show to move down the road to Stubbs, which featured a larger capacity and a smaller stage.
Lighting Director Cory Fitzgerald was tasked with adjusting the production to accommodate the new space, ultimately deciding upon the use of 60 Nexus 4×4 panels from Chauvet Professional. With only eight hours to set up, the team successfully managed to create the NEXUS light wall to deliver a tight, powerful LED grid with minimal lead time. Visions Lighting member Todd Roberts detailed the last-minute planning, explaining:
“[Lighting Director] Cory Fitzgerald was tasked with designing a system that would fit the creative and fit on a rather small stage for that large an act. Creative had renderings that showed what looked like a wall of light fixtures, and we all instantly knew what would work for that – Nexus!”
