This past October 24, in front of a sold-out Grand Central Miami crowd, BassHead Music was named the winner of the debut Red Bull Music Academy Culture Clash Miami. Modeled after a traditional Jamaican sound clash, the event pitted four South Florida music collectives—BassHead Music, Slow Roast Records, Moombahton Massive and a partnership between Black Chiney DJ Collective with Eccentrix Sound—against each other in a musical battle royale.

Tasked with bringing their own sound system, the collectives performed on four separate stages over the course of four rounds, with the victor chosen based on the loudness of the audience’s cheers. In order to warm the crowd up, “The Temperature’s Rising” round gave each collective seven minutes to play any music they wanted. The subsequent “Selector” round had the audience judge each crew on song selection and presentation. “Sleeping With The Enemy” provided a twist, as each collective had to impersonate one of the other competing teams. The final round—aptly titled “The Decider”—allowed them to show off their custom-produced tunes and performances.

The crews each brought out their own secret weapons throughout the night, with the night’s all-star lineup of surprise guests including Trick Daddy, Major Lazer, Noreaga, 69 Boyz, Quad City DJs, JT Money and Serani. Following many hard-fought battles and loads of surprises, the decibel meters crowned BassHead Music and their brand of bass-heavy tunes as the victor.
