Azealia Banks – ‘Heavy Metal and Reflective’

By  |

After a highly-publicized series of delays for her long-awaited debut Broke With Expensive Taste, rapper Azealia Banks has finally unveiled “Heavy Metal and Reflective,” her first release since her split with Interscope Records earlier this month.

As the follow-up to her 2013 LIL INTERNET-produced single “Yung Rapunxel,” “Heavy Metal and Reflective” is a sinister, subdued track cut out for the grimiest of clubs. The track features a future house synth foundation warped and twisted around a bouncing trap beat, complete with handclaps and screeching effects. Banks’ delivery eschews pop hooks for a deliberate, rhythmic approach that includes verses about everything from Tamagotchi toys to Michael Jackson’s seminal hits “PYT” and “Billie Jean.” It’s apparent that this isn’t a track aiming for radio dominance; it’s focusing on reestablishing Banks’ ethos of subverting the dance and hip hop mainstream.

“Heavy Metal and Reflective” is available now. Stream the track below.
